Presidential Speech: Good Morning my fellow Americans. My name is Kevin Silverman and I am running to be your next president along with my vice president Christopher Lulic. I believe that I will make a great president due to my strong leadership, perseverance and dedication to make the United States succeed. Just saying that I have these characteristics does not prove to you that I indeed have them. When I was young, I had a family member who was my aunt who was just like my “twin” as she would say. She was the closest thing I had had to a mother when mine was not there. One day, my father had come to visit me. It was obvious something had happened. He approached me and informed me of the news that my aunt had unfortunately passed away. This was devastating to a young boy. Soon after my family and I had understood that she had passed due to a misdiagnosis. Ever since that faulty day, I had devoted myself to making sure that this would never happen to anyone whether it be in regards to death, misunderstanding or simply pushing someone to their limits. This is why I am devoted to improving my country.
I was fortunate enough to attend Mepham High School, in Bellmore, New York as a teenager. Mepham is ranked as one of the best high schools in the nation. However, not every child in America has the same experience. Some children in America aren't fortunate enough to attend a strong public school. And if they do attend a strong school, testing has become so important yet it doesn't show case someone's true knowledge or potential. The United States ranks 17th in educational performance out of 40 countries ranked. Finland ranks first. The graduation rate in the United States right now is at 84%. This means that 4 of 5 high school students earn a diploma in 4 years according to the National Center of Education Statistics. 60 % of high income college students graduate and only 16% of college students graduate. We need to equalize education for all of our students, no matter if they come from high income or low income families in order to get more students to succeed. But even with schooling comes the required testing and exams that ultimately is not a true testament to someone's true knowledge or ability. Providing equal opportunities for education to all citizens to obtain high-quality education and training is a long term goal of the Finnish education policy, which I plan to introduce to the education policy of the United States. Basic education in Finland encompasses students from nine years and caters for all those between 7 and 16 years in which every 7-16 year old attends school because Finland does not choose their students. If we introduce these Finnish policies into the United States I fully believe that we could bring our education policy to a better place.
The United States is currently 21 trillion dollars in debt, if elected President, I would ultimately like to lower that number as much as possible. One major reason why we are in such debt is the War in Afghanistan. Statistics show that in 2017 the War in Afghanistan cost the United states 2.4 trillion dollars. It is my goal to devise a plan to decrease the amount of money by which we are in debt. The average American spends $1.33 for every $1 that is earned. This ties to some reasons that are caused by this which include: Credit card debt, -Federal Budget Deficit- State and a surplus of further reasons. In order to support the current generation and current financial status we must get dig ourselves out of the financial grave we dug ourselves because of the trillions of dollars we spent on the Afghanistan war. Without debt, we can properly focus on how to protect ourselves from future debt, future overspending and future loss in war.
This brings me to my next point of interest which is our place in the current Afghanistan war. As I previously stated, we are currently at an estimated debt of 2.4 trillion dollars. We have not just spend money on weapons and gear but we are repeatedly spending the lives of the ones who are serving our country in this war. Ever since the battle from 9/11 we have continuously thought about a recurrence if that and truth be told, that should not be the new normal. No matter why we were brought into this Afghanistan war, there have been too much money spent and lives lost to keep this recurrence. Furthermore, due the rise of ISIS, the fear has never been worse. From the attacks around countries to social media accounts and informants, to even bringing in children for their work. This has to be repelled and brought to an end. ISIS is undeniably a threat that should not be continued. They resort to unwillingly taping bombs to children or killing anyone who comes in contact with the United States, whether that be elderly or once again children. This must be brought to an end.
I, Kevin Silverman should be your president of the United States because I have devised multiple plans that have been worked on with myself and my Vice President to increase our safety, education and overall views in the United States. My views, goals and beliefs will not change. This makes me a very suitable candidate because of my determination to this country.
Vice Presidential Speech:
My name is Christopher Lulic and I am running as Vice President along side of President Kevin Silverman. I should be elected as your Vice President because I am a very caring and hardworking individual who wants the best for the people of this country. I have had many accomplishments that I have achieved. I have always been there to help my friends and family out when needed, also I was an A and B student in my classes, I have always been on top of my school work, I have worked very hard on the baseball field to compete, and I have also reached many of my goals from working hard every day in anything I have ever wanted to succeed in. I put others before myself because I care about others having success, not just myself. I believe in hardwork and success. I want to be Vice President because I want to help solve all of the problems of education and graduation rates, terrorism, war in Afghanistan, and economic problems that we are facing. When you work hard you will always find yourself ending in success more than failure. I want to run with my president Kevin Silverman as his running mate because I have known him for many years and I want to help him with solving the problems we are facing in our country. I believe he is the right person for the job as president and together we can make the right decisions for our country.
I applied for this job as Vice President of the United States because I was inspired by Joe Biden former Vice President for Barack Obama, I admire him because he was a hardworking Vice President who was determined to do what was best for the people. Joe Biden never gave up on any complicated challenges that he had faced. As a kid he had a stutter problem and has forced himself to get over it by giving speeches. That shows a lot of dedication of hard work. Joe biden has stated in quote, “Failure at some point in your life inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable.” This shows that Biden was always going to give a thousand percent no matter what he is facing. Biden helped with terrorism and the war in Afghanistan by being a strong supporter of the 2001 war in Afghanistan which he said “Whatever it takes, we should do it”. In 2002, Biden stated that Saddam Hussein was a threat to our national security and we needed to eliminate that threat.
Joe Biden also focused on education in order to increase graduation rate in the United States. He had a plan to make higher education free which would increase the number of people in college to 9 million. Also anyone earning under $150,000 should get a 3,000 tax credit for college. He had a plan of 30 billion dollars over 5 years for education. He said higher more teachers and pay them for smaller classes. He believed in paying teachers more to get better educational results. He also thought a longer school day and school year with a 16 year minimum would be better. He felt early education would help overcome the racial achievement gap.
We suffer from economic problems because we are over 20 trillion dollars in debt. Previously Biden had ideas to help our economy because he believed a strong middle class meant everyone does well. He wanted to address a tax code because it favored investors over workers. He also believed in educating our people and called for free community college. Biden believed in fair pay to empower workers. He also wanted to rebuild america's infrastructure.
If I am elected for Vice President I will help eliminate these economic problems as well. I believe in higher pay and increasing minimum wage so people can afford housing, education, and health insurance. I agree with Biden that free college would help our nation to succeed in the world today. There should be more jobs created to help Americans that are struggling economically today. We need to make sure the middle class stays strong. Keeping jobs on Long Island will help the younger generation stay here. We also need our retired people to be able to stay on Long Island. I hope you will elect me as your Vice President in order to stop these problems.
Education Policy:
1. What do you believe is the greatest problem in American education today? How does your administration plan to combat this issue? Explain. In areas not as wealthy as others there are high dropout rates and low graduation rates. We plan to put more money into the non wealthy areas so that the kids can get a better education and up the graduation rates.
2. How does your administration plan to increase the nation’s high school completion rate? Explain. - Include programs, support services, etc. We will offer additional programs such as MAP for students struggling in school students would benefit from this program because school isn't for everyone and kids who may not be able to learn in a public school can attend this school and get an education where the teachers are more involved
3. What is your stance on standardized testing? Do you believe standardized testing serves a purpose? Explain.
We believe that standardized testing is useless because there are students who participate during class and get all the answers right but then they take a test and they don’t do as well testing does not prove one's trueknowledge. We believe this because standardized testing stresses the student out and really does not show what the student knows.
4. What other methods can be used to assess our students and teachers? Provide specific examples to support.
Other methods that teachers can you to assess the students is by looking at the their grades in their report card. Teachers constantly overlooked by administrators. Research papers
5. How do you plan to ensure that students around the United States are college and career ready when they graduate from High School? Explain with specific examples.
Each student should take classes to help them figure out what they want to do and also to learn their future career materials earlier to see if they really are interested in it. Students are in school learning about certain topics which their future career might not have anything to do with. This means that if they learn about their career earlier they could have an understanding if they want to do that career or not.
6. Education has been called the “great equalizer.” Do you believe this statement rings true today in the United States? Explain why or why not. * If you do not agree with this statement, how do you plan to change things? Explain.
This phrase is incorrect. This is because there are so many differences between students and their access to the education they are allowed to have. Some people cant afford the education that other students may have. For example, students who live in richer communities receive a better education than some students in not as fortunate communites which have lower graduation rates and higher drop out rates.
7. What security measures do you believe need to be implemented into our schools in order to ensure the safety of America’s students and teachers? Provide specific examples and explanations. In order to enter the building you must present a school ID to a security guard metal detectors when entering school at the door suspicious activity would result in a through search of a person or belongins to make sure there are no weapons entering the building . This is necessary because it will help know who belongs to the school and if they have anything that could harm anyone in the building. It can reduce problems from happening.
8. Do you believe New York State should offer free college for all high school graduates? Explain.
Yes I agree with this because many high school students worked very hard to graduate high school and should get more credit and help for the next step.
9. Do you believe there really is a crisis in American education? Explain. Examples: programs, classes, teachers, college preparedness, academic achievements, etc.
Yes there is an educational crisis because the graduation rates need to increase because many students do not learn the same material. High income people tend to get more education and be more successful. Low income people tend to have lower graduation rates. Tests need to limit also in order to help fix the problems of education. Many students get anxious and are very stressed out for a test. Getting rid of testing will help students listen and pay attention in class to remember the material for good, not just to remember the information for a test and then forget about it after the test.
Economy Policy:
Q: In 2001, our National Defense Budget was $280 billion dollars. After the attacks on September 11th, we have seen our defense budget continue to grow. Our National Defense budget is currently over $700 billion dollars. Do you plan to increase, decrease or maintain this budget?
Within our national defense, there is an amount of approximately $708 billion in our national defense. This includes investing in our armed forces, houses for current and retired military personel to creating and testing nuclear weapons. My team and I believe that this amount should be lessened by decreasing from direct compensation and benefits to active military and civilian personell just enough to have them to still be able to survive, and just enough to have the ability to spend more to keep our place in the war.
(We plan to decrease the budget of our national defense by about 150 billion dollars because we are spending way more than double what we were spending when the attacks on the World Trade Center occured and decreasing the budget of 150 billion wont have too much of an affect on our national defense)
Q: What programs (you must identify SPECIFIC programs) do you intend to cut from our National Budget to decrease our deficit? Explain.

Q. For many Americans, foreign affairs are not a topic they are knowledgeable. Do you believe that awareness of foreign policy issues is important for Americans? Why or why not? How do you plan to increase American engagement in foreign policy issues? Explain.

Q: How does your campaign team plan to make America’s schools safer and more secure? Be specific with your plan.
We plan to enforce that all schools should have metal detectors at every entrance of the building in order to detect weapons as they enter the building. Next, there will be increased security around the building, finally, if a student doesn't present an ID to a security guard they will not be allowed to enter the building there will be no signing in.
Conclusion Questions:
Q. Throughout this project you have participated in a variety of activities from research to presentations. You have improved your knowledge of content and have improved a variety of skills that you will need for your future. What is the thing that you have learned the most from this project?
Before coming to Participation in Government, our knowledge of current policies and news were limited. With PIG now coming to an end, we spent a lot of our time studying education, foreign, and economic policies along with learning how to work alongside fellows who you agree and disagree with to better enable specific or general topics. Overall, Participation in Government is a very educational and well needed class.
